Later this morning I recorded another message to the Universe. I reminded myself that life can change in an instant. I still believe that unexpected things can happen, that a single meeting can alter the course of a life, and that hope is worth holding onto. I asked again for one of those little “winks” I’ve come to enjoy—perhaps another toonie, perhaps some other quiet sign that I’m moving in the right direction.

2026-07-12 - Dollarama Frog

I took the kids to Dollarama and then McDonalds where we ate and played cards. At Dollarama we saw this little frog figurine (see photo to the right). My daughter said that it was something that would give her nightmares if in her room!

Throughout the day I explored a wide variety of subjects, from classic board and card games to travel ideas, YouTube strategy, and the future I want to build. We talked about Clue and how its deduction mechanics work, where every suggestion gradually eliminates possibilities until the mystery can be solved with certainty. We also revisited Old Maid, a game that has entertained families for generations, while noting that some modern editions have adopted more neutral names even though the traditional title is still the one most people recognize.

Later this evening I headed over to McDonald’s for a black coffee. While there I asked the question, is it still possible to build a successful channel today, given how crowded the platform has become? Rather than chasing unrealistic dreams of instant fame, I began thinking more practically about what kind of channel would genuinely fit who I am. The idea of travelling across Canada in a modest camper van, reviewing vegan restaurants, cooking healthy meals, stealth camping, and documenting the journey continues to resonate with me. The conclusion wasn’t that YouTube would necessarily become a major source of income, but that the adventure itself could be worthwhile regardless of subscriber count. If success follows, wonderful. If not, I would still have experienced Canada in a way few people ever do.

That naturally led to discussions about vans, conversions, and practical retirement travel. Because of my two knee replacements, comfort has to come before aesthetics. Rather than an expensive Instagram-style camper, the recommendation was to keep things simple, reliable, and easy to move around in. We discussed the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana as practical choices and looked into having a straightforward custom conversion completed here on Vancouver Island. The goal isn’t luxury—it’s creating a comfortable, dependable home on wheels that allows me to travel, film, cook, and enjoy the journey.

After McDonalds I drove home to spend a little more time with the new eTrike. Even though it was already dark, I took it out for a short ride between the Barn Suite and the garage. It certainly wasn’t the grand inaugural adventure I’d imagined, but it accomplished something more important: I figured out how to turn on the headlight and finally understood how the ride-assist system works. Those are small victories, but they’re real ones. Every new skill begins with an awkward first attempt, and tonight felt like the beginning of becoming comfortable with a machine that may one day carry me on much longer adventures.

As I look back on today, it ended with learning something new, taking another small ride forward, and imagining a future that still contains possibility. Perhaps that’s what becoming is really about—not dramatic overnight transformations, but a steady accumulation of small steps that slowly point life in a new direction. Today wasn’t spectacular. It didn’t need to be. It simply reminded me that progress often arrives quietly, one insight, one conversation, one ride, and one hopeful thought at a time.
