Some Saturdays are packed with activity. Others are quieter, but somehow leave a deeper impression. Today felt like one of those days.

The morning started slowly. At 1:35 p.m., I found myself talking to the Universe again. The sun was peeking through the clouds over the Comox Valley, and I found myself grateful for the simple things—fresh air, clean water, good food, and another day to experience life. But there was also frustration. The night before I had asked for a simple wink in the form of a toonie or a meaningful sign, and nothing had happened. For the first time in a while, I admitted out loud that I was beginning to wonder if I was simply talking into the void. I even challenged the Universe rather bluntly. If you’re there, show me something. If you’re not… well, you know what I said. It wasn’t my most spiritual prayer, but it was probably one of my most honest.

2026-06-27 - Huge Plate

I made a huge plate of v1.04 food for lunch! (see photo to the right).

Later in the afternoon I headed over to Benino’s Coffee. There’s something about sitting there with a large Canadian coffee that encourages reflection. I propped my tablet up on the table and started watching Disney’s Fantasia. I hadn’t planned on reviewing it today, but as the music and animation unfolded, I found myself thinking less about whether it was a good movie and more about why Walt Disney would have made something so unconventional. It struck me that Fantasia asks the viewer to slow down, pay attention, and simply experience beauty. That’s a lesson I probably needed more at sixty-six than I ever would have at sixteen.

While Fantasia played quietly beside me, I opened the bundle of books I had recently purchased from Richard—the man who reinvented his life by moving to the Philippines in his eighties. I worked my way through all five: You’re Allowed To Go, The Honest Move, Everything I Learned Living Abroad, The First 30 Days, and The People Who Think You Are A Bank. They weren’t long books, but they contained an idea that resonated with me deeply.

One chapter title stopped me in my tracks:

“Becoming.”

Underneath it was a sentence that read:

“The man you were at home doesn’t have to come with you.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

Richard was writing about how moving to a new country gives you permission to leave behind the labels you’ve carried for decades. The person everyone thinks they know. His point was that you can arrive somewhere new simply as yourself.

As I sat there in Benino’s, it occurred to me that my own journey isn’t really about moving to the Philippines.

It’s about becoming.

Maybe that’s why this idea keeps appearing in my life from different directions. The AI Diet. Learning guitar. Meeting people through the Coffee Club. Making YouTube videos. Reading classic books. Watching classic films. They’re all different expressions of the same desire—to become more fully alive.

The Philippines may or may not become part of that story someday.

Today reminded me that becoming doesn’t begin when the plane lands. It begins wherever you are willing to start changing.

Perhaps that was today’s real wink.

Not a coin.

Not a miracle.

Just a quiet reminder, hidden inside a cup of coffee, an eighty-five-year-old Disney film, and five little books written by a man who refused to believe that life stopped offering new beginnings simply because he had grown older.

As I drove home, I realized that this ordinary Saturday had quietly become one of those days I’ll probably remember for a long time. Not because anything dramatic happened, but because it reminded me that the person I am becoming is shaped less by grand events than by ordinary afternoons spent paying attention.
