Daily Notes
I woke early today, long before the rest of the Valley stirred, somewhere around 5:15 a.m. The streets were empty, still wrapped in night air. I decided to take a drive to A&W for breakfast—a quiet ritual of late that I’ve come to love. I told myself, half-jokingly, that I’d start the diet again later today, but deep down I knew this morning wasn’t about the food. It was about motion, solitude, and the calm of being out there in the dark, feeling the hum of the car beneath me and the world still asleep.
And then it happened. The radio came alive with the unmistakable melody of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.” It took me a few moments to recognize it. At first I thought, “I know this song,” and then suddenly it clicked—this is the song I’ve been using in my YouTube shorts. The realization hit just as the final chorus began. I fumbled for my phone and tried to record it, managing to catch only the last five seconds before it faded. But that was enough. That was the moment that mattered. It felt like the Universe tapping me on the shoulder, reminding me that heaven doesn’t need to arrive all at once—it can reveal itself in fragments, five seconds at a time.
As I drove home through the dim light, I couldn’t stop thinking about that timing. I hadn’t recognized the song until it was almost over, but I did recognize it. Maybe that was the lesson: that heaven has been playing in the background all along, waiting for me to notice. I’ve been catching on near the end of the song for years, only now learning to listen sooner. The part I captured—the tail end, those closing words—carried the entire message. It was as though the Universe was saying, You don’t have to see the whole picture to know it’s yours.
Later in the morning, I weighed myself: 304.5 pounds. That’s 57.4 pounds down from where I began. It felt good to see that number. The old version of me might have seen it as a goal still far away, but now I understand what Neville meant about living in the end. Each weigh-in isn’t a report card—it’s a snapshot of a state I’ve already entered. I’m not “trying” to lose weight anymore; I’m remembering that I already did. Every pill I take, every scoop of collagen, every glass of water—it’s all part of aligning my body with that finished reality. I checked off my daily pillars, one by one, not as chores but as proof that the bridge of incidents is unfolding exactly as it should.

My daughter and I went for a drive & coffee this evening and I stopped at Tim Hortons for a bathroom break. As I walked past the merchandise shelf, something caught my eye—a black cat mug (see photo to the right). I thought instantly of my daughter’s cat, Batman, and knew she’d love it. I bought it for her, and when I handed it over, her whole face lit up.
Tonight, before bed, I’ll record my nightly whisper, opening myself again to the Universe. I’ll ask to be shown the next inspired step, though I already suspect I’ve been shown plenty today. From the song on the radio that reminded me that heaven is already here, to the ocean’s mirror stillness, to the moment my daughter smiled at that black cat mug—everything pointed to the same truth. Heaven doesn’t arrive with noise and spectacle. It slips in quietly, disguised as ordinary life.
And maybe that’s what Becoming really is—not the pursuit of transformation, but the recognition of it. A song, a sea, a smile, a cup of coffee—all of it evidence that what I’ve been asking for is already happening. Heaven is a place on earth, and today, I saw it again and again.
