📋Additional Daily Notes

Sunday began at an hour that barely qualifies as morning. At 5:10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, while Courtenay was still dark and silent, I was already awake for the USA versus Canada hockey game. There is something uniquely surreal about watching a major rivalry matchup while the rest of the world sleeps. The house was quiet, the day not yet formed, and for a brief window it felt like I was living in a different time zone entirely. Unfortunately, Canada did not manage one of their usual dramatic escapes. No late miracle, no triumphant finish. Silver instead of gold.

When the game ended, the early start immediately reclaimed its toll. The adrenaline drained away, the grey morning settled back in, and I returned to bed. It carried that strange sensation of having already experienced a full event before most people had even woken up. The day effectively restarted later under a blanket of Vancouver Island weather — overcast, rainy, and drifting between light showers and heavier bursts. A very West Coast Sunday.

By afternoon, restlessness nudged me out of the house. The familiar internal debate began: where to eat, what to eat, whether to be sensible or indulgent. I eventually landed at Smitty’s, sitting alone in a booth as the rain persisted outside. After briefly considering alternatives like a club sandwich or fish and chips, I defaulted to my long-standing standby: the Complete Breakfast with pancakes, plus a side of wheat toast and a large pot of coffee (see photo to the right). Somewhere during the small talk I casually mentioned that my birthday had been the previous week. To my mild surprise, the waitress comped the coffee. A small, simple kindness that subtly brightened an otherwise grey day.

I lingered over the meal, watching videos from the Regular Guy YouTube channel. Scenes of the Philippines played across the screen — tricycles, streets, everyday life unfolding in warm climates far removed from the damp chill outside the diner windows. It struck me again how easily my mind travels there. No matter the starting point, my attention often drifts back to Southeast Asia, to that entirely different rhythm of life.

From there the mood turned unexpectedly reflective. I found myself thinking about Robin Williams’ monologue in Good Will Hunting, the way he speaks about his wife with such intimacy and lived-in affection. That scene has always carried an unusual emotional weight. It is not flashy or romanticized; it is about companionship, imperfections, and deep familiarity. Watching it stirred a quiet longing — not for fantasy, but for that sense of shared life and effortless closeness.

Music followed naturally from that emotional space. I listened to Foxes and Fossils, again struck by Maggie Adams’ voice. There is something about certain songs that bypasses thought entirely and goes straight to feeling. The lyrics, the harmonies, the softness of the arrangement — they acted less like entertainment and more like mirrors. The reaction was visceral and unfiltered, a reminder of how powerfully art can intersect with private emotion, regardless of age or circumstance.

Later, practicality took over. Instead of drifting to a café for another coffee, I drove to Costco. The cart filled with cauliflower rice and frozen vegetables, quiet signals of another dietary reset forming in my mind — what I jokingly labeled a “Chinese food diet” starting tomorrow. Alongside the sensible items, however, sat a curiosity purchase: a black-and-gold box of Dubai-style chocolates. A perfect Costco paradox — disciplined intentions paired with a single, exotic indulgence.

Evening brought another familiar psychological crossroads. Around nine o’clock the urge to get out of the house resurfaced. Not hunger exactly, but that peculiar nighttime restlessness that accompanies rainy Sundays. After some internal negotiation, the gravitational pull of McDonald’s won. Fries appeared on a tray under bright lighting, and once again the Philippines reentered the scene via Regular Guy videos. The pattern was almost comically consistent: movement, lights, comfort food, and distant tropical imagery closing out the day.

By the end of the night, the day felt oddly cohesive despite its wandering nature. An early-morning hockey disappointment, a comforting diner ritual, reflections on love and companionship, music-induced emotion, pragmatic grocery choices, and a late-night fast-food detour. Rain outside, Philippines on screen, and the quiet awareness of another Monday approaching.
