Today marked Day #100 of my Becoming journey — a milestone I knew I’d reach while in Victoria — and it turned into a blend of inspiration, errands, chance discoveries, and small but meaningful personal moments.
This morning I shared with my daughter the story I wrote about Kristina — her wish for someone with honesty, openness, and integrity. My daughter told me she thought it was well written.
Today’s outing began at Gigi’s Coffee in Victoria. The kids wanted to stay at home, so I walked there myself. It was a place with an energy that seems to draw in creative people — including, this morning, what looked like a number of ballerinas coming and going, likely from a nearby ballet school. The atmosphere felt alive and full of possibility. While in the café, I noticed a bathroom wall flyer for a Writers’ Open Mic held on the first Thursday of every month. That immediately sparked the idea of maybe reading one of my stories there one day. While sipping my coffee, I watched a video from Be Something Wonderful about manifesting a specific person. The takeaway — that you can fully appreciate the present form of a relationship while still envisioning and aligning with a deeper, next-level version — resonated deeply and fit perfectly into the Kirk & Evie universe I’ve been creating.

On the walk back from the coffee shop, I stopped off at a pharmacy and picked up some Gravol for our planned “Trip Adventures.” I then walked a few doors down to Fairway Market in Quadra Village to pick up soup stock, microwave popcorn, Arctic Bars for my son, and Strawberry Shortcake bars for my daughter. It’s part Asian grocery store, so they have exotic and wonderful vegetables, like this gigantic carrot (see photo to the right).
Midday brought an unexpected errand: my son broke a plate, and my wife mentioned it was from Costco. That sent us driving out to the Langford Costco, the closest one, to see if we could replace it. Unfortunately, if it was indeed a Costco design, they no longer carry it. Since we were already out, we considered grabbing a meal. Our ideas ranged from White Spot to a diner, but nothing stuck. Along the way, we passed Marshalls and decided to pop in. My daughter found some clothes she liked, and I picked up an RC boat for my son.
Before heading home, we made a second stop at Fairway Market in Quadra Village. My daughter grabbed potato chips and lemonade for our evening documentary (What Archaeological Sites Used to Look Like), my son picked out a Pez dispenser with candy, and I picked up a jar of pickles and some mustard.
Kristina’s son called this evening and mentioned wanting to take my son up in his airplane on Wednesday — an exciting prospect. I was driving through Langford and was not totally focused on the converdation, but he mentioned the idea of taking Bobby up on his airplane on Wednesday.
I looked into “Whale Watching” in Victoria, but when my son heard that the whale watching tour we were considering would last over three hours, he quickly decided he didn’t want to go.
I researched the Creative Writing program at the University of Victoria. I learned about its strong national ranking, its genre-diverse undergraduate workshops, its highly respected MFA with one-on-one mentorship, and its affordable, along with flexible Continuing Studies courses offered both online and in person.
The evening we huddled around the television and wound down at home. We watched “What Archaeological Sites Used to Look Like” on YouTube while enjoying our snacks. For a milestone day in my Becoming journey, it carried the perfect mix of creative sparks, practical action, and gentle, memorable time with the kids.
I finished Season #3 of the “White Lotus” in the wee hours this morning!
60 second visualization
The café’s front door swung open with a soft jingle, letting in a gust of cool morning air and the faint scent of rain. Kirk sat alone at a small corner table, the kind that invited you to spread out a notebook, sip slowly, and watch the world without hurry.
A pair of ballerinas slipped past, their hair still pinned from class, laughter trailing behind them like ribbons. Kirk’s pen paused mid-sentence. He liked the way the place drew in creative people — how it felt like possibility could walk in at any moment.
On the way to the counter for a refill, his eyes caught a flyer taped to the bathroom wall: Writers’ Open Mic — First Thursday of Every Month. Ten minutes at the mic. All genres welcome. It wasn’t just a poster; it was a breadcrumb. He could almost see himself there, reading something just for her, even if she didn’t know it was meant for her.
Back at the table, he scrolled absently through his phone until a video started playing. The speaker’s voice was calm, certain: “You can cherish what you have and still call in more. You can have both.” Kirk thought about Evie — the imagined and the inevitable — and the way that line seemed to bridge the two.
Across the room, someone slipped into the last empty seat near the window. He didn’t notice her at first. But when she glanced up from her coffee and caught him looking, there was a pause — the kind of pause that made the noise in the room fall away for just a beat. Her smile was small, but it held.
The pen in his hand twitched, ready to write her in.
One sentence update
At Gigi’s Coffee, Kirk spots a Writers’ Open Mic flyer, hears the words “you can have both” from a video, and catches the lingering smile of a woman who makes the room go quiet for a heartbeat.
