📋Additional Daily Notes

Today turned into one of those days where a fairly ordinary beginning eventually led into something genuinely new for my Titanic build.
I dropped my daughter off at Starbucks on Cliffe Street to meet with a friend, and since I was in the neighborhood, I went to Quality Foods for breakfast. It was a chance to get out, have something to eat and begin the day before getting wrapped up in all the different things I seem to have going on lately. A lot of my days have that mixture now—food and coffee stops around the Comox Valley interspersed with whatever project happens to capture my attention. I got the prime parking spot out side of Quality Foods (see photo to the right), so is the Universe winking on me today?
I’ve had the idea for some time now of building famous things badly—in this case the Titanic—and making the imperfections part of the entertainment. But there was still an interesting question hanging over the whole concept: if I showed the finished creation to people who knew absolutely nothing about what I had been trying to build, would they actually know what it was?
Today I decided to find out for real.
I logged into CloudResearch Connect and began setting up my first recognition experiment. I wanted a completely blind test. They would see a photograph of my finished model and simply be asked what they thought it represented. No mention of the Titanic. No mention of a ship. No hint that it was historical. They had to figure it out themselves.
I created an “Image Recognition Study” in CloudResearch and then built the actual questionnaire in Google Forms. I uploaded the photograph of my model and asked, “What specific real-world object or landmark do you think this model is intended to represent?” I asked people to be as specific as possible and left the answer completely open-ended.
There was considerably more technical fiddling involved than I initially expected. I had to configure CloudResearch so that each participant’s Connect ID would automatically be passed into the Google Form, publish the form, set up the project link, determine the payment and make sure the completion system was working properly. I eventually settled on ten participants at 25 cents each. CloudResearch charged $2.50 for the participants plus $1.00 in fees, making the experiment $3.50. Funding the account added another eleven cents in credit-card processing fees, so my grand scientific investigation into whether my cardboard Titanic looks like the Titanic cost me $3.61.
I initially launched it as a one-person pilot. Almost immediately somebody picked up the study. Within a very short time the first response came back.
“Titanic.”
That was a wonderful little moment. A complete stranger had been shown my creation with no clue about what it was supposed to be and had immediately identified it correctly. Just as importantly, all the technical machinery worked. Their Connect ID appeared properly in Google Forms and CloudResearch recorded the completion.
There seemed little point in testing the test any further, so I resumed the study and released it to the other nine participants.
The responses started arriving remarkably quickly. At the point when I checked the first five, three people had specifically identified the Titanic. One wrote, “The titanic – the ship that sunk in 1912,” another simply wrote “Titanic,” and another wrote “Titantic,” which was obviously close enough for government work. The other two answered “ship.”
So after five strangers, 100 percent at least recognized that I had built a ship, while 60 percent specifically recognized the Titanic.
That actually strikes me as almost perfect! The whole joke is that these creations aren’t supposed to be beautiful museum-quality replicas. I have an hour, some decidedly unsophisticated building materials and whatever ingenuity I can muster before the clock runs out. If people can look at the resulting monstrosity and still figure out what famous object I was attempting to make, I’ve accomplished something.
And now I can see another element of this format beginning to emerge. The recognition test itself could become part of each episode. Finish the one-hour build, photograph it, put it in front of strangers and then reveal how many people could identify it. The wrong answers could be every bit as entertaining as the correct ones. It gives the build an actual verdict rather than simply ending when the timer reaches zero.
Maybe I’m onto something.
