2026-02-19 - Tin Town Art

Today turned into what could only be described as a four-coffee day, something I certainly did not plan but somehow fully committed to anyway. The morning began at the Tin Roof Café, where I barely had time to settle in before being informed of their “no laptop” policy. After finishing my coffee under mild protest, I packed up and relocated. They did have an interesting art piece in their bathroom, I will give them that (see photo to the right).

Next stop was Bigfoot Donuts, which felt like a small victory in atmosphere alone. I sat there for about an hour, enjoying the simple pleasure of being left alone with caffeine and my thoughts, before heading off to pick up my daughter from school. The day was already developing that familiar Comox Valley rhythm of movement, pauses, and minor detours.

Somewhere in between driving duties, I grabbed a black coffee at Tim Hortons — practical, efficient, and entirely consistent with my ongoing relationship with their drive-thru. After dropping my daughter off at home, the gravitational pull of Benino’s proved irresistible, where I settled in with a London Fog and a much calmer sense of place. Certain coffee shops simply feel like psychological home base.

On a far more satisfying note, The newsletter quietly ticked upward to 13 subscribers. Still tiny by any rational metric, yet progress is progress, and small numbers have their own strange charm. Every subscriber still feels like an actual human being rather than an abstract statistic.

Perhaps the most interesting experiment of the day, however, was posting Chapter One of my new fiction piece based on Stephen King’s writing style on Facebook for the Neville crowd. I have no idea what kind of reactions that will generate, but the overlap between fiction, perception, and Neville-style thinking continues to fascinate me. At the very least, it adds another thread to the ongoing Becoming narrative.
