📋Additional Daily Notes
Today began quietly.
It was grey and rainy again, one of those soft West Coast days where the clouds hang low and everything feels slightly muted. I got in the car and headed toward Parksville, letting the road and the rhythm of driving settle me. Along the way, I listened to The Power of Now, not as something to study, but as something to keep me anchored in the present. Just a steady reminder in the background to stay with what was happening instead of drifting into thought.

Partway there, I stopped at a Petro-Canada. A quick bathroom break, a small pause, and a lottery ticket. For a moment, I wondered if today might be lucky. It wasn’t. No win. No surprise. And strangely, that was fine. I noticed it, accepted it, and moved on without making a story out of it.
In Parksville, I went back to Jalapeños Mexican Food Parksville, the same place I’d visited the other day. This time, I ordered the three crunchy taco platter with refried beans and Spanish rice (see photo to the right) — the kind of meal that always reminds me of eating in the US. I added chips with guacamole and salsa, and it all hit the spot. The food was comforting, filling, and familiar. I sat by the window, rain outside, warmth inside, and just enjoyed being there without rushing.
After lunch, I made a stop at Quality Foods Parksville for the first time! I headed upstairs to their café area, quite the improvement over the Courtenay/Comox version! It’s open, calm, and slightly removed from the busyness of the store below. I ordered a mocha and a white chocolate raspberry scone, found a seat by the glass, and settled in.
Below me, carts rolled. Shelves were stocked. People moved through their errands. Life kept happening.
Up where I was sitting, it felt slower.
I took a few sips of coffee. A few bites of the scone. I watched videos. Let my thoughts drift. Let my body relax. It wasn’t about doing anything productive. It wasn’t about planning. It was just about being there.
Listening to Eckhart earlier in the day made that moment feel different. Sitting in a grocery store café, I realized this was the practice he talks about — not in a meditation hall, not on a cushion, but right in the middle of ordinary life. Coffee. Pastry. Window. Stillness.
There was a time when I would have wanted more from a day like this. More meaning. More signs. More proof that something important was happening. Today, I didn’t need that. The day justified itself.
A drive in the rain.
A losing lottery ticket.
Good tacos.
Warm coffee.
A quiet place to sit.
Nothing dramatic. Nothing extraordinary.
And yet, it was enough.
I left Quality Foods feeling calmer than when I arrived. Clearer. Lighter. Not because anything special had happened, but because I had stayed present for what was happening.
Still learning.
Still showing up.
Still becoming.
