Day #0872 – (Fri., Jan. 16, 2026) – (ChatGPT #0258 – $5 McValue Meal!) (NF:D#4: -17.5 lbs.)

Last day of the work week folks! Here comes item #1 on my “ToDo List”: (You can use these symbols: ✅).

New Format… Day #00? (5/14–>50%=Win!) (<290 Today??? – No)

So I’m going to start this next month with a new format and see how it goes. I’ve been doing primarily lists for the past few years, but I thought I would try something different…

The main goal is to: get back to <290 lbs.

I’m still going to have “ToDo” Lists at heart, but this time I’m going to couch these “ToDo” items in paragraphs to provide a narrative on what needs to be done. In doing so, hopefully I will get myself into the mood of getting things done. The goal is to complete the “ToDo” items in the paragraphs no matter what each day, with a lot of regular “ToDo” items to follow these paragraphs if I happen to feel extra “energetic” and want to get more done. Ready? Here goes…

To start off each day, record my weight as I have been doing so far:

  • #01: 📈 Weigh yourself! (361.9 lbs. – 323.1 lbs. = 38.8 lbs. total weight loss.)
  • ✅ #02: 📉 Record Weight Down in Title!
  • ✅ #03: 😴 Record any Nighttime Whispers! (None!)

The main go for the next month or so is to focus more on my health and getting back down to <290.0 lbs., which I did do last August, but have gone up considerably since then. I need to put the benefits of losing weight at the forefront of my mind:

  • To simply feel better.
  • To be able to walk faster.
  • Walking in Philippines.
  • Shins.
  • Prolong Knees.

To do this I will be going back to the basics, and initially adopting Andrew Taylor’s SpudFit diet, of only potatoes and condiments for the next month. This can/will include both regular and sweet potatoes, almond milk, “sugar” included condiments but “without fat”, tea, coffee, Zevia, 0% alcohol beer, and water.

📋Additional Daily Notes

This morning started with real-life parenting stuff right out of the gate. My son had to go to the hospital for a dental procedure, so everything else got built around that. I drove my daughter to school for 9:00 a.m., and I remember feeling a bit unsure physically — my leg was wobbly again — so the original plan was to drop her off and go straight back home to rest. But instead, I did that thing where you negotiate with yourself in the car, and I decided to stop at McDonald’s.

I grabbed their $5 McValue meal — and honestly, it felt like a small miracle in itself. You get the sausage and egg and cheese on an English muffin (see photo to the right), a hash brown, and a small coffee. For five bucks. In 2026. I never thought I’d see a day where fast food pulled back and admitted it had gotten ridiculous, but I really do think the complaints and backlash must have been so loud that the corporations had to listen. Prices have been crazy for the last year or two, and suddenly it feels like there’s a shift happening where these chains are bringing value meals back in a desperate attempt to win people over again. I enjoyed it, not because it was gourmet, but because it felt fast, familiar, and cheap — a tiny relief valve in a morning that was already heavy.

After that, my body basically claimed the rest of the day. I slept for most of it, trying to rest my wobbly leg, and the rest of the time was quiet and slow. I had my laptop with me and I watched more of that new Leonardo DiCaprio movie One Battle After Another — it’s still strange to me how quickly new movies now drop into streaming. I was almost finished it, just watching on my small screen, half resting, half drifting in and out.

Even though the day was physically limited, my mind wasn’t. I kept thinking about my newsletter and the business card strategy. We talked about the QR code going to an intermediate page first, before the landing page sign-up — basically adding a “trust step” in between. The idea makes so much sense because people need context. If someone scans a QR code in a random place, they’re not ready to commit to anything yet.

We talked about tracking too — Bitly versus Kit tracking, and whether Bitly is worth paying for at this stage. I like the idea that if I’m running my own WordPress website, I could use plugins and redirects to do the same job, essentially building my own tracking ecosystem. It’s funny… I keep seeing myself become more and more of a systems builder, even in something as simple as a QR code. One idea leads to another. And suddenly it’s not “a newsletter.” It’s the beginning of a local brand.

And that’s what I really love about this whole thing — the idea of eventually building an audience of local subscribers, and then one day turning that into something physical. I’ve been thinking about this: if I ever open a café in the Comox Valley, having a local newsletter with a big subscriber base would be like having your own built-in marketing machine. Not generic followers spread around the world — actual people living right here. Subscribers who already trust you. People who already open your emails. That kind of local list is power. It’s leverage. And it changes what is possible.

We even went into the idea of what comes after 1,000 subscribers. Where would I open a café? How much would it cost? Is it smarter to do a small “coffee window” model first? Would Comox be better because it’s calm and affluent, with steady daytime traffic and the marina vibe? And then it hit me: before a full café, why not rent a table at a farmer’s market? That would be such a great intermediate step. Low cost. Real-life visibility. Community. A place where people are already in discovery mode. A perfect place to pitch a local newsletter and build even faster momentum.

Later in the evening, despite my knee still bothering me, I ventured out. I didn’t want to go far, so I ended up at Thrifty Foods. I bought ingredients to make turkey vegetable soup — something comforting, something real — and I cashed in the tickets from yesterday where I’d won three dollars. While I was there, I bought a couple scratch tickets: Blackjack and Gold Rush. There’s something about it… it ties into a feeling I’ve missed. A time a couple years ago when it felt like miracles were happening. Like my life was more magical. Like I was on a winning timeline. I’ve been craving that version of reality again — not the drudgery, not the grind, but the feeling that good surprises were normal.

Before scratching the tickets, I wondered if I should say something — like a Neville-style “living in the end” statement, something to the universe, something to prime the moment. I did. I leaned into the ritual side of it. Not in desperation, but in play. And then I scratched. And… nothing. Rats. Both tickets were losers. The bonus boxes practically laughed at me. But still, it wasn’t entirely wasted, because the deeper thing I was reaching for wasn’t the money. It was the feeling. The willingness to believe again. Even that matters.

After that, the rest of the night leaned back into simple domestic comfort. I asked about making rolls in the air fryer — because even that feels like a small piece of rebuilding the home base. I’ve got flour and ingredients, so I could. I asked about cookies too, and the fun part was figuring out how to do it with what I had: no butter, but applesauce. No egg yolks, but egg whites. Somehow I love that. It feels like “make it work with what you have,” which might be the theme of the entire year.

And then — a real little win. I checked my Already Becoming YouTube channel and saw I’d gained one more subscriber. Total 7 now. That made me smile. Because it’s proof. Tiny, quiet proof. Not a viral moment. Not a sudden explosion. But one more real person. One more signal in the direction of momentum.

Before the day ended, we also talked about a bigger health goal — the wild one — the idea of six-pack abs at 65, 5’7”, 320 pounds. We talked about what would actually be required: time, protein, consistency, a high-satiety approach. And then I admitted what I already knew: I’d probably be hungry on the standard diet plan. Which brought me right back to the SpudFit philosophy — potatoes, simplicity, fullness, repeatability. It’s strange how often the answer isn’t “more complex” but “more sustainable.” Something that keeps me in the game.

And finally — dinner prep planning. I have an Instant Pot, a pound of ground turkey, cabbage, and everything needed for turkey cabbage soup. The kind of meal that makes the next day easier. The kind of meal that is both diet-friendly and soul-friendly. I even thought about making it in slow cooker mode, letting it run low and steady, like the day itself.

It wasn’t a loud day. It wasn’t a triumphant day. But it was a real day. A human day. A day where I rested, recovered, built systems, dreamed forward, tested my faith, scratched the tickets anyway, and still ended it with soup ingredients and one more subscriber.

And that counts.
