Today turned into one of those wonderfully eclectic days where almost every conversation tied back to the same underlying theme: becoming. Whether it was weight loss, guitar playing, filmmaking, or planning for life in the Philippines, everything seemed connected by the idea of slowly transforming into the person I want to become.

One of the first topics that caught my attention was the story of Jon Gosselin. Like so many people who experience sudden fame, his life became a reminder that money, television, and celebrity don’t necessarily lead to happiness. His story naturally led into another transformation story—Nikocado Avocado. I was fascinated to learn that his dramatic weight loss appears to be genuine after all. Losing more than 250 pounds reminded me that extraordinary physical change really is possible. It also raised a practical question I’ve wondered about for myself: what happens to all the loose skin after a major weight loss?

2026-07-08 - McD Volkswagen

I went to McDonalds this afternoon, had my regular small black coffee, and saw an old black VW bug out front (see photo to the right).

My creative side got plenty of attention today as well. I shortened my narration script for The Rusty Lawn Tractor to fit comfortably into a one-minute video and then created metadata in the style I’ve been using for the Already Becoming series. I still smile thinking about that old tractor sitting quietly at the end of a forgotten road. Funny how an ordinary object can collapse fifty years into a single moment. Those are exactly the kinds of stories I want this channel to preserve.

I also continued refining my Google Sheets systems. We tracked down an incorrect lifetime-hours formula, corrected the range it was summing, and confirmed that I’d logged 565 minutes, or 9.42 hours. Little fixes like that may seem insignificant, but I’ve come to appreciate how satisfying it is when a tracking system quietly works exactly the way it’s supposed to.

My long-term guitar project also took another step forward. Instead of simply learning the notes to Sultans of Swing, I restructured the project into a progression that focuses on actually becoming a player who sounds like Mark Knopfler. Chords, fingerstyle technique, rhythm, lead fills, solos, dynamics, lyrics, recording, and finally performing the complete Alchemy Live version. The realization that the secret isn’t the solo but the touch was an important one.

Another fascinating rabbit hole was artificial intelligence and filmmaking. I discovered Kling AI, one of the newest image-to-video generators capable of creating remarkably cinematic footage. Instead of replacing my own photography, I can imagine using it to gently animate still images—perhaps bringing the rusty lawn tractor to life with swaying grass or adding subtle movement to a sunrise over Goose Spit. I also explored sources of free Manila walking footage and even considered the possibility of hiring someone in the Philippines to film original 4K walking tours for future videos. The thought of combining my own narration with authentic footage of places I hope to one day call home feels incredibly exciting.

Later in the evening I found myself reflecting on George Harrison’s philosophy of life. His journey from Beatlemania to spirituality resonated deeply. He reached a point where he believed fame, possessions, and ego mattered far less than love, kindness, and seeking God. It struck me that while my own path has been influenced by many different teachers and ideas over the years, the destination often seems surprisingly similar: becoming a calmer, more loving, more authentic version of myself.

I also learned more about Mark Wiens’ early travels, discovering that a two-month backpacking trip through the Philippines around 2008 became one of the pivotal moments that eventually led him to Thailand and the life he enjoys today. It’s remarkable how a relatively short trip can redirect an entire life. It reminds me that I don’t necessarily need every detail of my future figured out. Sometimes one decision naturally leads to the next.

Looking back on today, I realize that almost every conversation revolved around transformation. A healthier body. Better systems. Better storytelling. Better guitar playing. Better understanding of life. None of these things happen overnight. They happen one ordinary day at a time.

And perhaps that’s the biggest lesson of all.

I’m not trying to become someone else.

I’m simply becoming more fully myself. 🍁
