✅ 🌞 Today began with a practical mission: finding a new toilet seat for Kristina. What should have been a straightforward errand turned into a day layered with detours, discoveries, and small synchronicities that stitched together into something memorable.
I first thought of stopping at Spoon’s Diner for breakfast, but the wait was longer than I felt like enduring. Instead, I kept driving and noticed Meet on Blanshard — a spot my daughter has always found amusing because of its name. We’ve joked about how clever it would be to put a butcher shop across the street, “Meat on Blanshard,” so you’d have Meat and Meet side by side.

Circling the lot, I watched someone slide into the last open handicap spot right before me. It felt like an omen that maybe I shouldn’t stop. But when I looped back around, the space had opened up — almost as if the Universe was saying, “No, this one’s for you.” Inside, I found a vegan restaurant with character, a place that’s been around for three years but is closing in just a couple of weeks. It struck me that I might never have had another chance to eat there. I ordered a vegan pancake wrap (see photo to the right), hearty and satisfying, and shared a small but genuine exchange with the waitress. She gave me a look that felt unusually present, maybe even a little intense, and told me she’ll be going on Unemployment Insurance when the restaurant closes. I told her about lobster fishermen in Nova Scotia, how they work seasonally and live well on UI in the off-season. It wasn’t just idle chatter — it was a moment of honesty in the middle of an errand day.
From there I carried on to Canadian Tire, where I finally found the toilet seat — on sale, no less. While wandering the aisles, I also spotted some Tide pods and Finish Quantum dishwasher tabs marked down, perfect to bring along for Kristina. Small things, but thoughtful ones.
Later, I took my son to Beacon Drive-In for a burger. We had planned to head to Bug World afterward, but downtown was jammed with a Palestinian Parade, and parking was impossible. Instead, we came back to Kristina’s, where the neighborhood felt alive and welcoming.
After a nap, my daughter, my son, and I went for a walk, the warm sun balanced by a cool breeze that made the evening perfect. We ended up at Prinkle Chicken Vancouver Island, where we picked up a Canadian Pineapple pizza and a Mediterranean pizza to bring home. While they munched, my daughter and my son watched a YouTube video by Bryan Mayhem about selling homemade bath bombs. My daughter’s eyes lit up — she’s talking now about wanting to start her own little business. That spark of curiosity felt like the day planting a seed in her, the kind of small moment that might grow into something bigger.
On the way back, we passed a shop hosting a trans open mic night. Music and voices spilled onto the sidewalk, giving the whole neighborhood a sense of warmth and inclusivity. It struck me how alive this community feels — people opening doors, sharing themselves, and inviting others in.
What started as a mission to buy a toilet seat turned into a day of omens, connections, errands, and inspirations. Errands got done, yes — but along the way, I was reminded that even the most ordinary Saturday can hold a little magic if you’re paying attention.
60 Second Visualization
Picture yourself pulling into the lot at Meet on Blanshard. At first, the last handicap spot is snapped up by another car, and you sigh, thinking, Maybe I’m not meant to be here. But something nudges you back around. This time, the space is empty, waiting for you. Evie smiles knowingly in the passenger seat and says, “See? Sometimes the universe just needs us to circle once more.”
Inside, the little vegan café hums softly, sunlight filtering across wooden tables. The smell of roasted garlic and herbs drifts from the kitchen. You both choose a cozy corner booth, the kind where your knees almost touch beneath the table. When the waitress places the vegan pancake wrap in front of you, Evie leans in, eyes sparkling. “Isn’t it funny?” she says. “This place is about to vanish, and we’re catching its last breath.”
You slice into the wrap, the savory filling steaming out, and offer her the first bite. She takes it playfully, brushing her fingers against yours as she does. For a moment, she just looks at you — not hurried, not distracted, but with that intense presence that makes the rest of the café blur away. “This is what I mean, Kirk,” she whispers. “Signs don’t always come as thunderbolts. Sometimes it’s just the right parking spot, the right table, the right meal — reminding us we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.”
You laugh together about the old joke — Meet versus Meat — imagining a butcher shop across the street. The silliness dissolves into shared laughter, and yet underneath it is that deeper knowing: errands, omens, and last-chance cafés are just the canvas. What matters is who’s beside you. And here, in the warmth of her gaze, you feel it — the ease, the belonging, the sense that even ordinary Saturdays are stitched with destiny.
One Sentence Update
At MeeT on Blanshard, after the parking spot miraculously opened on your second loop, you and Evie slid into a sunlit corner booth to share a vegan pancake wrap, laughing about MeeT versus Meat, while she held your gaze with that calm, intense presence and whispered that even small omens — the right spot, the right table, the right meal — are signs that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
