Today turned out to be one of those days that wandered in several different directions — practical life in the morning, technology troubleshooting in the afternoon, a little driving around in the evening, and somewhere in between all of that, a surprisingly deep conversation about a novel idea that has been forming in my mind.

The day began with a practical task. My wife wasn’t feeling well this morning, so I took our van for servicing. The appointment was supposed to take about an hour to an hour and a half, but as these things sometimes go, they found several small items that needed attention. Nothing serious, thankfully, but the visit stretched closer to two hours.

While waiting, I spent the time reading a book about the life of Keith Moon. It’s something I’ve wanted to read for quite a while, so the unexpected waiting time turned out to be a good opportunity to make progress in it.

After the van was finished, I headed home, took a nap, and then spent some time on the computer working on updates — mostly trying to sort out Wi-Fi adapters and driver updates that had been nagging at me.

Later in the evening, around 6:30 PM, I decided to head out for a bit of a drive. I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going at first, but my wife mentioned that we needed two gallons of milk. That gave me a destination.

Then I had the idea to take a drive all the way out to Union Bay and grab a submarine sandwich at Subway there.

Unfortunately, when I arrived they were closing around 7 PM. The staff seemed apologetic and explained that if no customers had come in for a while they sometimes shut down early. I’m not entirely sure how the franchise rules work for closing hours, but either way I had missed my chance at a sandwich.

While I was there, I managed to do something slightly alarming — I accidentally dropped my laptop outside in front of the Union Bay General Store and the Subway location. Luckily it didn’t break, though it did dent the side a little. That could have been much worse.

Before leaving the area I placed a few of my yellow business cards there, just in case someone might come across them.

Since dinner in Union Bay didn’t work out, I drove back to Walmart in Courtenay, picked up the two gallons of milk, dropped them off at home, and then headed back out again for something to eat.

At that point I took advantage of a deal at A&W — Teen Burgers for $4.99 each — and grabbed two of them.

Then I went over to McDonald’s, ordered a small coffee, and sat there eating the Teen Burgers while watching a little YouTube (see photo to the right).

And that’s where I found myself tonight.

But the most interesting part of the day actually happened during our long conversation about a story idea that has been developing in my mind… “The Earthworm Legacy”! This evening it became Seed #074.
