Daily Notes

This morning began in a half-dream state. I woke up around 11:04 a.m. with Neville Goddard’s voice playing from YouTube: “Relax and flow. Even the impossible will manifest.” His words slipped straight into the dream I was having.

In the dream, I had gone outside to pee and, for some reason, stripped all my clothes off. I was in a clearing that looked like East Mountain near my childhood home — wide open, no trees to cover me. Vulnerability. I was frantically trying to put my clothes back on before anyone could see me. A man walked past, and then I noticed what looked like cops nearby. My heart sank; I thought they were there to arrest me for indecency.

But instead of punishment, their words were encouragement. Their voices echoed the very lecture I was hearing: “Stay on the path. Keep going. Don’t let doubt dissuade you.” What felt like judgment turned into reassurance. I woke realizing the Morning Whisper: even in my most vulnerable, exposed state, life is not here to arrest me. It’s here to remind me to keep on Becoming.

Later in the day, while I was cleaning out the chicken coop, something caught my eye. It looked like a Toonie in the shavings and dirt. My heart jumped, but when I picked it up, I realized it was just a washer. Still — the resemblance was striking. It even had that bronzed inner ring look. A Toonie is currency, value, proof of abundance. A washer is utility, strength, the piece that quietly holds things together. Maybe that’s the point. Not all treasure comes as money. Some things — some people — carry value simply by holding the structure steady. I tucked that away as a Becoming sign: a washer-Toonie, ordinary but extraordinary.

At one o’clock, we drove out to Hatchmere Farms, right across the street from the Air B&B we stayed at when we first came to Courtenay. The mission: four hens for Valentine, our rooster. Two of one breed, two of another. The farm was alive with animals, and we met Molly, a golden retriever service dog in training. She was all sweetness, leaning in for pets, only distracted when she discovered a bone.

Bringing the hens home was exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Would Valentine accept them? Would they accept him? By evening, they had all lined up together at the coop entrance, ready to go in for the night. Valentine hopped up onto a roost, keeping a little distance but showing no signs of aggression. Balance was beginning to form.

At 5 p.m., it was haircut time. I drove my son out to the hairdresser, just a couple of doors down from his friends house at the farm we were thinking of buying before we moved to Courtenay. I got my usual trim — short, wispy gray, easy to deal with — while my son got his cut. My wife brought our daughter along as we were finishing up. My son wasn’t thrilled with his haircut; it wasn’t what he wanted. To soften the sting, I took him to McDonald’s for a 2 Cheeseburger Extra Value Meal and a chocolate shake.

Over burgers and fries, we talked it through. I suggested a solution: he could find a haircut picture online that he really likes, and I’ll use AI to map it onto a photo of him. That way, next time he can simply show the hairdresser exactly what he wants.

2025-09-20 - A&W Papa Burger

Food wove itself into the day in other ways too. After picking up feed for the hens, I had stopped at A&W and tried their Papa Burger for the first time (see photo to the left) — something new. Later, I pulled into Tim Hortons for a Double-Double, an M&M cookie, and a donut.

By evening, I still wasn’t sure what to eat. I weighed the options — the pub near the airport, White Spot in Courtenay, McDonald’s, Subway — but none of them felt quite right. At Quality Foods, I picked up a pack of Tim Tams. Still undecided, I wandered into Thrifty Foods and finally settled on bacon and potato salad and a slice of cherry pie. With bread still at home to finish, I decided I’d cap the night with a killer sandwich.

Looking back, September 20th carried one theme: arrival.

  • The Morning Whisper showed me that what looks like judgment can transform into encouragement.
  • The washer-toonie reminded me that value doesn’t always shine like currency — sometimes it hides in the work that holds everything together.
  • Four hens arrived for Valentine, bringing balance, life, and companionship.
  • My son and I spent some time together.
  • Even my wandering search for food ended in small arrivals — an A&W Papa Burger, a cookie, a pie, and a sandwich waiting at home.

Arrivals don’t always shout. Sometimes they whisper. A dream. A washer. Four hens. A conversation with my son. A slice of cherry pie.
