Daily Notes

I woke this morning caught between ghosts and sparks. My mind drifted back to two girls I used to know, Stephanie in Australia and Annette in Nova Scotia. Religion and fear ruled me in those days.

The truth is, I slept until nearly 2 p.m., and I laughed bitterly when I finally rolled out of bed. Maybe when I lose more weight I will have more energy?

Just before waking, I had a dream about my mother’s family gathering at cousin Dean’s place — some sort of Halloween party or reunion. My mother wasn’t going, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I didn’t want to go either. I saw myself surrounded by people I barely knew, once again performing to keep up appearances, pretending there was belonging where there wasn’t. In the dream, I finally said, “I’m not going.” I stayed home. That choice felt like a whisper: stop performing for others. Stop wasting energy on appearances.

2025-09-06 - Waffle Area

When I did get up, I managed to clean up the Griddler waffle area (see photo to the right).

This afternoon I took my son out for Boba at Pokey Page in Courtenay. On the way there we had a talk about bullying. I told him how different it is today compared to when I was young. Back then, the advice was to fight your own battles. Today, it’s smarter to involve teachers, principals, employers, even police if needed. I told him to be like a cat: know when to pounce, know when to walk away. Use the law, not fists, to protect yourself. It felt like one of those father-son talks that will hopefully stick with him.

He ordered honeydew with pearls this time, and proudly announced that he has now tried all fruit flavor! We picked up a Taro Milk Tea for Katie as well. We sat together at one of the tables and played this little quiz game that we picked up in Victoria at “Thrifty Village”! Questions like “Super Bowl” and you had to know it was football, or “Flatiron Building” and you had to know New York. It was fun, light, and a small but meaningful moment of connection.

After dropping him home, I went to Costco and spent $98 on staples — potatoes, egg whites, tomatoes, pickles. The backbone of my Becoming diet. No Toonies or lottery wins today! Just groceries and the small ritual of carrying them up to the barn suite. With my two knee replacements, I’ve developed a system: I set the bags on the bottom step, move them up three stairs, then climb two myself, repeating until everything makes it to the top. It’s slow, steady, almost meditative. And it works.

On the drive home this evening stopped by Tim Horton’s and saw this cool corvette. I thought about Mr. Rudolph, a man from church years ago. He wanted to be a country-western singer, but because of the demands of the church, he had to give it up. He never made it to Nashville. Instead, he struggled with odd jobs and financial hardship, and later in life, when the truth came out that the the church teachings were wrong, he was crushed. He realized he had given up his life for lies. His story haunts me — and it wakes me up. I could have been another Roy. But I’m not. I got out before it destroyed me. My fire is still here, waiting.

Later in the evening, I made myself a big bowl of tiny potatoes — air-fried and dressed with mustard, salsa, hot sauce, and my homemade ketchup. By 8:16 p.m. I was tired and thought about taking a nap before finishing my potato video for tomorrow. But a heaviness lingered. It was Saturday night, and I felt like the joke of life — the one always holding the door for others to pass through, while I waited at the back of the line. I was left with promises that tomorrow would be better. Tonight, I struggled to see it.

And yet, even in the weariness, I felt a whisper: your fire isn’t gone — it’s waiting. Maybe that’s what today was really about. Potatoes, ghosts, sparks, dreams, groceries, even the weight of regret — all pointing me back to the same truth. My fire is still here. And it’s mine to feed.
