📋Additional Daily Notes
Today didn’t unfold as one clear storyline. It felt more like a series of small moments, small conversations, and small ideas that didn’t seem connected at first, but slowly began to form something when viewed all together. Somewhere in the background of it all was that simple idea: Snow on the Railing — how real change actually happens. Not all at once. Not dramatically. Just accumulation.

The day moved in that usual open-ended way. No rigid structure, just stepping into it. At one point I was sitting with a coffee and gelato, nothing special on the surface, just a quiet moment. No pressure to turn it into anything meaningful, just being there. Those kinds of moments tend to pass without notice, but they seem to stay with me more lately.
Somewhere along the way my mind drifted to a memory from years ago, a music video from maybe 25 years back. I could remember the melody being catchy, and I had this vague image of a bank robbery, but the details weren’t clear. It struck me how memory works like that. You don’t recall things exactly as they were. You hold onto fragments, impressions, and over time they blend together into something that feels real, even if parts of it aren’t accurate.
From there I ended up at Thrifty Foods. I went in for batteries and came out with batteries, along with a Crispy Crunch, a Bounty, and a Mr. Big. It’s almost automatic. You go in with a practical intention, and then a few small decisions quietly stack on top of it. Nothing deliberate, just a series of small yeses.
After that it was McDonald’s. A $5 McValue meal and a coffee. Sitting there watching people come and go, and then noticing something that most people probably wouldn’t have paid attention to. Two small kangaroo figures (see photo to the right) sitting on the counter. No explanation, no context, just there. Balanced, almost intentionally placed. One of those details that doesn’t mean anything, but somehow becomes part of the experience anyway.
In between all of this, other threads were moving through the day. Thinking about Duncan, the City of Totems, and places like the totem poles, the Kinsol Trestle, and the Raptors Centre. Not one big defining attraction, but a collection of smaller ones that together give the place its identity. The idea of a Dunkin’ Donuts somehow existing there came up too, layered into that landscape with those local landmarks, blending something familiar into something local.
Even some of the more random or playful ideas that came up during the day seemed to follow the same pattern. Nothing significant on its own, just small inputs, small sparks, building without trying to.
Then the focus shifted to something simple and practical. Two potatoes, cut lengthwise, soaking in water. An air fryer, some oil, salt, and spices. The question was how to make the best possible fries. Not just decent, but restaurant-level.
And the answer wasn’t a single trick. It was a process made up of small steps. Soaking the potatoes to remove starch. Drying them completely so they don’t steam. Using a dehydrator to remove even more surface moisture. Freezing them to change the internal structure so the inside becomes softer and fluffier. Cooking them once at a lower temperature, letting them rest, and then cooking them again at a higher temperature to bring everything together.
None of those steps on their own feels like the moment where everything changes. But together, they produce something completely different. Something better.
That’s when it becomes clear that it wasn’t really about the fries. It was the same pattern that showed up throughout the entire day. The coffee and gelato. The stop at Thrifty. The chocolate bars. The McDonald’s meal. The kangaroos on the counter. The half-remembered music video. The thoughts about Duncan. The small creative ideas that came and went.
Individually, nothing stands out as significant. But together, something forms.
Earlier, the image was snow falling on a railing. Not a storm, not enough to change anything all at once. Just a few quiet flurries. One flake landing, then another. At first nothing seems different, but slowly, almost invisibly, a thin line begins to appear.
That’s what today felt like. Not a big day, not a turning point, just small things. Small thoughts, small actions, small observations.
Most people are waiting for the storm, waiting for the moment when everything changes all at once. But real change doesn’t seem to work that way. It shows up quietly, almost unnoticed, accumulating over time.
A coffee. A chocolate bar. A random detail you notice. A better way to make fries.
One flake, then another, and another, until one day you look again and everything is covered.
