📋Additional Daily Notes
Saturday unfolded as a mix of errands, writing, technology tinkering, and a bit of quiet observation around town. In the afternoon, I headed over to Quality Foods in Courtenay, making my way upstairs to the small coffee area known as “A Step Above”. The place closes fairly early, around 4:30 p.m., so I settled in for a short visit before they shut things down. While I was there, I had a simple snack — a raisin biscuit with peanut butter and jam — along with an Americano with a bit of almond milk. It was one of those calm little pauses in the day where you can sit quietly, watch people move around, and think about the various projects swirling in your head.
On the way up to the coffee shop, I also did something connected to one of my ongoing local projects: I dropped off some of my **yellow promotional cards** in a few spots around the store. It’s part of the slow, steady effort to spread awareness about my projects around the community. Small actions like that don’t feel dramatic in the moment, but over time they add up.

While ordering at the counter, I struck up a quick conversation with the woman serving me. She mentioned she was originally from the Philippines, specifically from “Boracay Island” (see photo to the right), which immediately caught my attention because of my long-standing interest in the Philippines and the charitable ideas I’ve been exploring there. I tried out a little bit of Tagalog — “Tingman Ko…” — and she immediately recognized what I meant. It was a small moment, but those kinds of interactions are always interesting, especially when they connect with themes that have been on my mind lately.
Later in the evening, my attention shifted from coffee shop reflections to a much more practical challenge at home: setting up a **new soundbar** for the television. What seemed like a simple hookup turned into a bit of a technical puzzle. I had connected the soundbar through HDMI, but the television still appeared to be using its internal speakers. After navigating through the TV menus, I eventually found the key setting under the sound menu showing **“Sound Out: External Speaker (Optical / HDMI ARC)”**, which suggested the television was already configured correctly.
The likely issue, it turned out, was either the input setting on the soundbar itself or the HDMI cable being plugged into the wrong port. With HDMI soundbars, the cable usually needs to be connected to the specific **ARC port** on the back of the television so that the TV can send audio out properly. Like many tech problems, the solution was probably simpler than it first appeared — just a matter of confirming the correct input and cable location.
Alongside all of this, a good part of the day was spent continuing to think through the development of **Evie**, a character for a novel project I’ve been working on. Instead of simply describing her personality, I’ve been building a large framework of real-world situations — eventually reaching two hundred scenarios — designed to reveal how she behaves as a wife, mother, and friend. The idea is that character is best revealed through actions rather than description. One phrase in particular captures her approach to conflict: when someone speaks harshly or unfairly, she calmly resets the moment with something like, “That didn’t land right. Let’s try that again.”
By the time the day wound down, it felt like one of those quiet but productive Saturdays where several different threads of life move forward at once — local errands, creative work, small conversations with strangers, and a bit of technical troubleshooting at home. Nothing dramatic, but plenty of little moments that, taken together, make up the rhythm of an ordinary day.
