📋Additional Daily Notes

Today started with me finishing the Advent Calendars for the kids. I do this every year to stretch Christmas out rather than compress the whole holiday into one morning of ripping paper and disappearing excitement. After I got them filled and organized, I felt like getting out of the house and having a coffee somewhere. I didn’t have a plan, just a vague sense of wanting a change of environment and maybe a shift in energy.

My first thought was to head to the Twisted Mint Café, so I drove that way, but when I passed by it, something felt off. Not negative—just not a match for what I wanted. I kept going and decided to swing by the new Tim Hortons on Cliff Street to see if it was finally open, but it was still mid-construction. I didn’t feel like turning around and going home, so I kept driving and thought about heading to Benino’s in Comox. I even started making the turn to go there, but as I did, I saw a couple of girls walking, and for some reason, I just kept going straight instead of turning. It wasn’t a logical decision, more like my body was steering itself.

A minute later, I ended up at the Tin Roof Café. When I walked in, the vibe was right—warm enough, calm enough, and not overdone. I ordered an Americano (see photo to the left), sat down, and kind of let myself be in the moment, not trying to make anything happen, just waiting to see what the day wanted.

Sitting there, I remembered it was Day 4 of the potato reset. I had gone three full days eating nothing but potatoes, and I could feel it in my digestion. That got me thinking about adding something new, because strict monotony is powerful, but I don’t want to hit a wall later and rebound into cravings. Jasmine rice came to mind as the first step out of “potato-only,” and I wondered how my body would respond. I also thought about other starches like Weetabix or oatmeal and whether they’d be too stimulating or just different in the wrong way.

That led to the bigger idea of introducing one new food per day up until Day 14: rice today, oatmeal tomorrow, corn the day after, and so on, in a predictable, structured progression that doesn’t ruin the reset. There was also the question of vegetables—whether to include them or skip them entirely. Vegetables complicate things, and they often invite sauces and toppings that I don’t want during this reset, but they can also help with digestion.

I asked directly whether I personally should add carrots starting today, given everything known about me and my patterns. The response made sense: adding a small, plain serving of carrots daily would likely keep digestion comfortable and help me stay consistent. For me, comfort equals compliance, and compliance is what keeps momentum.

By the time all that thinking and talking was done, I actually had jasmine rice and carrots ready to go for dinner. It felt like the perfect Day 4 meal: simple, neutral, and not pushing any dopamine buttons. I learned how to make jasmine rice in the Instant Pot using a short cook time and natural release to keep it fluffy without oil. I also found out how to cook carrots quickly in the Instant Pot, either steamed or boiled, in a way that keeps them low-reward and functional rather than “delicious.”

Tonight’s meal ended up being potatoes, rice, and carrots—quiet, bland, and intentionally boring. It’s exactly what I want right now: food that supports me, doesn’t tempt me, doesn’t hijack my attention, and doesn’t cause digestive drama. I’m starting to see how this diet can stretch into a longer, stable phase if I make small, smart additions one day at a time, without waking up the part of me that wants to chase comfort through flavor. It feels like I’ve stepped into a calmer rhythm, where food is fuel and life gets more space again.
