Our poor hen “Spot” is sick. She perched last night, but was on the barn floor this morning. By evening she closed her eyes one last time.

Afterward I needed to move. I got in the car with no plan except to drive. The sky was overcast, the roads half-empty. I thought about heading toward Quality Foods in Courtenay but changed my mind halfway there. Something in me wanted a place I didn’t visit often, somewhere quiet. On the way, I stopped at Thrifty Foods to use the restroom. Two veterans stood outside selling poppies for Remembrance Day. I hesitated, then found a Loonie in the cupholder and bought one. I pinned it to my jacket before going inside, used the bathroom, and stepped back into the cold. When I reached the car again, I touched my lapel and realized the poppy was gone. Maybe it fell off in the store, maybe in the car—either way it was missing. It felt like the theme of the day: small disappearances, quiet losses.

2025-11-01 - Flying Apron

I kept driving and ended up in Comox, in front of The Flying Apron. I’ve driven past it a hundred times but have only been inside once. Usually by the time I think of it, it’s closed. Today it was open, and that felt like reason enough. Inside smelled of coffee and bread. I ordered an Americano with oat milk and sat near the window with my laptop and Amazon Fire (see photo to the right).

Without really thinking, I opened YouTube. The first video on the feed was titled Instant Activation – Command the Subconscious. It felt like an echo of the work I’ve been doing, so I pressed play. The speaker said, Love is the feeling of being cherished and chosen. I paused the video and wrote that down. It wasn’t about romance—it was about belonging, the kind that begins inside.
