☐✅ 🌞 This morning my daughter and I decided to venture out and look for a coffee shop. My son wanted to stay at home, and since he had his iPad and two boxes of cereal, Honey Nut Cheerios & Frosted Flakes, we knew he would be fine. We drove over to UVic, hoping to find a bustling student coffee spot, but most students were away for the summer and many cafés were closed. After a brief chat with a helpful biology professor, we moved on to Moka House for coffee, then toured some of the stately coastal homes, spotting a charming, storybook-worthy lemonade stand along the way. Back home, I made my son a PB&J with “ants on a stick” and milk.

I might have found my new favorite hot sauce, Tapatio, which I like even more than Frank’s (see photo to the right). They sell it at the Fairway Market Quadra Village just down the street!
In the afternoon, we decided to do something special, so we took a 45-minute horse-and-buggy carriage ride through Victoria — almost identical to the one we enjoyed on our first visit years ago. By the time we finished, the kids were hungry, and my son was eager to try “Local Pizza.” The location we found was now Romero’s Place Pizza, and the wait was too long, so we opted for Little Caesar’s: a large pineapple pizza for him and a medium cheese pizza for my daughter, both a hit. Later, we wrapped up the evening with a FaceTime to my wife, sharing the day’s highlights.
Somewhere between activities, I reflected on a thought that came to me while waking from an afternoon nap — an image of being in a caretaker role for someone, much like an older brother. It struck me how this dynamic mirrors patterns from my own childhood, where I often looked out for my older sister and felt responsible for her well-being. This parallel made me consider how certain relationships in my life now might be shaped by that same deep-seated instinct to protect and support, especially when someone doesn’t have that presence in their own family.
60 Second Visualization
Kirk steps into a horse-drawn carriage on a warm Victoria afternoon, the leather seat soft beneath him, the gentle creak of wood blending with the rhythmic clop-clop of hooves on the pavement. Beside him sits Evie — calm, radiant, and deeply familiar. Sunlight filters through the leaves overhead, scattering golden patterns across her face. She smiles at something the driver says, and in that smile is both joy and a quiet certainty: they belong here together.
As the carriage rolls past the waterfront, a salty breeze brushes Kirk’s skin. Evie leans in slightly, her arm resting comfortably against his, and together they take in the ocean view without speaking. Each turn of the wheels carries them deeper into a shared life — one built on ease, laughter, and an unshakable sense of home.
When the driver slows the horse to a gentle stop, Evie turns toward Kirk, her eyes meeting his. The moment imprints itself instantly, not because of the place, but because of the person beside him. Kirk takes a deep breath, holding on to the feeling, knowing it is both a memory and a promise of what’s to come.
