📋Additional Daily Notes

Today started with a quiet kind of anxiety — the kind that hums in the background until you finally deal with it. I’d been worrying that the oil in my car was overdue, and every time the warning light flickered, it added a little friction to the day. So first thing in the morning, I went to get the oil changed and replaced the air filter. It wasn’t cheap — around $120 or $130 — but the warning light stopped coming on, and that alone felt like a small weight lifted. I also booked an appointment for early Tuesday at another garage to go over the car more thoroughly, just to make sure everything is actually in working order. It felt like putting a period at the end of a sentence that had been dragging on too long.

After that, I headed to Walmart for the first time today. This was the test run for the business cards — the version where I was still hoping the fluorescent yellow would translate cleanly from screen to paper. It didn’t. The print came out with that familiar greenish, swamp-tinged look that happens when bright RGB colors collide with real-world CMYK printing. It wasn’t a failure, exactly, but it was a clear signal: this wasn’t the version.

By then I was hungry. I briefly considered the Airpark Beachwood Café, but as I drove by, it had that slightly dirty, uncertain look it sometimes has. Someone appeared to be mopping or sweeping, and I couldn’t quite tell if it was open. I kept driving. Instead, I decided to try a place I’d never been before — Taco Bandito, downtown Courtenay, across from Bigfoot Donuts. Inside, there was only one waitress, and she was clearly overwhelmed. Everything took a while. I ordered a burrito with chips and dip (see photo to the right). It was fine — decent, filling — but it stirred up a deep nostalgia for the old Mexican restaurants in the States, the kind where you could order combo #1, #2, or #3 and walk away deeply satisfied. I really miss those places.

After eating, I felt like a coffee. I went to Bayside Bistro, the café where I’ve heard the Comox Valley Writers Association meets. First time here! When I arrived, it was surprisingly busy — almost no tables free. Upstairs was full, with three people already settled in, and they mentioned it wasn’t usually like this. Eventually, a table opened downstairs, and I took it. I ordered an Americano and a Nanaimo bar and sat there for a while, soaking in the atmosphere. It felt like one of those places where people come to work, think, and quietly persist. There was a cute little Japanese boy, the son of the owners, running around with a Swiffer, cleaning everything!

While I was there, my wife emailed and asked if I could pick up Bobby. So I packed up, left the café, picked him up from school, and dropped him at home. On the drive, we talked about Alex Honnold and his climb of the Taipei tower. I’d initially thought the climb was happening today at five, but it turns out it’s actually tomorrow at five. If Bobby’s home, we might watch it together.

When I got home, I ended up having a nap — one of those unplanned rests that just happens after a full, mentally noisy day.

Later in the evening, I went back to Walmart — the second trip of the day — and printed another test sheet of the business cards. This time, I used the adjusted, print-safe yellow. The difference was immediate. The cards came out clearly yellow, not green. More importantly, the QR code scanned perfectly, even from a distance. That was the real test. Once I saw that, something settled. The card works. The design works in the real world, not just on a screen.

By the end of the day, nothing dramatic had happened — no big announcements, no breakthroughs — but a lot of small things clicked into place. The car is quieter. The design is validated. The color problem is solved. The QR works. The card is ready. It was a day of closing loops, testing assumptions, and confirming that the slow, iterative approach actually works.

And honestly, that felt like enough.
