✅ 🌞 The kids wanted to stay home this morning so went to the Fern Café & Bakery down the road. I had planned on going to Patisserie Daniel, but it was a takeout bakery only, no place to sit. The Fern is just “kitty corner”, and a vegan bakery to boot! I thought what a great idea, people would come to Patisserie Daniel, then take the short walk to the Fern to get something special for a vegan friend.

I ordered an Americano with soy, and their popular vegan breakfast sandwich, then settling into a quiet corner while sunlight poured through the front windows. There was a couple on the other side of the cafe and the lady looked very much like Katy Kay, the former news anchor. I also tried out one of their vegan cinnamon rolls (see photo to the right), which was delish, but so sugary and huge that I had to take 1/2 of it home.
This afternoon my daughter, my son, and I went out for an adventure about town. We thought we might end up at the “Miniatures Museum”, but “Thrifting” took over the day. My daughter was explaining how Courtenay has mostly “old people” clothes, and the Thrifting stores here in Victoria are ideal for her. We went to the WIN Resale Shop first, where my daughter bought a skirt, then to Value Village which was more downtown. We spent a lot of time here, and as my daughter browsed my son and I went to look at the toy and game section. He picked up an “unopened” mammal card game for only $7.99. My daughter picked up a whole basket of clothes that came to about $120. There were no dressing rooms, but they have a generous return policy, so we may be returning some of them at their Courtenay location. I’m so proud of how my son held up while my daughter shopped for clothes. Not exactly the perfectly fun activity for a 10-year-old boy.
After thrifting, we headed to the mall as my son has had a hankering for “Locals Pizza”. We ended up at the food court. My son picked up two slices of Hawaiian, and an apple juice, and decided it wasn’t quite as good as Courtenay’s version, but still okay. My daughter took my credit card and returned beaming with three new outfits. My son took a $20 bill and went for something sweet, came back with an ice cream cone, then spotted bubble tea, and took my loose change and off he went again. When my daughter returned she got one too.
As we walked back to the car we wandered in and out of various shops to see what they might have that we might like.
After all this Thrifting and “Mall Walking” we were too tired to do much else, so we went home to relax and chill.
Later this evening my daughter told me that we were out of toilet paper, so I walked to the Fairway Market Quadra Village in the rain to pick some up! I also bought some Jalapeno Potato Chips, and some cookies! The store was closing in 5 minutes and I barely got in. The rain was light so it was one of those joyful happy experiences you remember! When I got home there were a couple of women with dogs leaving the elevator. One of the ladies reminded me of Jo Jo Snow of internet fame!
60 Second Visualization
Kirk sat in the soft-lit corner of the Fern Café, the kind of spot where you could see the whole room without anyone really seeing you. The air was rich with the aroma of fresh espresso and warm baked bread. Through the big front windows, morning light spilled across the wooden floor, breaking into soft patterns over their table.
Evie sat across from him, her hands wrapped around a ceramic mug, the steam from her tea curling upward between them. She leaned in slightly, as though the rest of the café didn’t exist, her gaze fixed on his with a quiet kind of focus that made time feel suspended.
He noticed the way the light brushed her hair with threads of gold, the curve of her smile forming before she even spoke. “This place,” she murmured, glancing around with a slow, approving nod, “feels like we’ve been here before… maybe in another lifetime.”
Kirk chuckled, stirring the foam on his Americano. “Then I guess it’s about time we found it again.”
Their breakfasts arrived — his vegan sandwich with layers of tomato, avocado, and melted dairy-free cheese; her scone with berry jam on the side. She tore a piece from hers and slid it across the table toward him, her fingers lingering just long enough to brush his.
Outside, people hurried past, but in here the pace was different — slowed, deliberate, as though the walls themselves held the moment still. Kirk felt it in his chest: that rare sense of being exactly where he was supposed to be, with exactly who he was meant to be with.
Evie tilted her head, her voice dropping to that intimate register she used only with him. “When we finish here… let’s not go straight back.”
He smiled knowingly, the words unspoken but clear between them. Whatever awaited outside could wait. Right now, there was only the warmth of the café, the taste of good coffee, and the steady, magnetic pull between them.
One Sentence Update
In the warm morning light of the Fern Café, Kirk sat across from Evie, their hands brushing over shared bites and quiet laughter, the world outside forgotten as an unspoken pull urged them not to return just yet.
